The 10 biggest lies I've heard
1. This is going to hurt just a 'little bit'..
This is every dentist's favourite line and every patient's nightmare..
2. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to you..
What the person actually means is 'We don't know who you are and we don't really care what it is that you're going through.. Its performance appraisal season and we're just being polite for obvious reasons..
3. Your call is important to us.. Please hold the line while our representative (I forgot the rest!)
Are you telling me that your customer complaint cell representatives are eager to hear me whine and crib and complain about how your service is so bad?
4. You look thin in this dress..
It means that the other person is actually rocking the outfit but you just want to burst their bubble and so drop a fake compliment while ensuring the other person never forgets he/she's 'fat'..
5. Santa's watching you.. Stop misbehaving..
This is something I say to my kid.. But she's not the naive 6 year old that I was.. Her next question is 'Where Mama? Does Santa live in the chimney?' And this lie lost its power of instilling fear in my daughter since I burst out laughing at her question about the accommodation arrangements of dear Santa Claus..
6. Now the speaker will speak a 'few' words..
Well, I've yet to attend a function where the speakers speak a few words.. So for me the phrase 'A man of few words' is actually redundant..
7.I'm on my way
I'm guilty of using this too.. For future reference when I say 'I'm on my way' it means I've yet to dress up or I'm just about leaving my home..
8. Ticking the check box that says 'I have read all the terms and conditions'..
Do we EVER read all or even some of the terms and conditions?
9.Friends forever..
Will never get over this one..
10. Not tonight dear.. I have a headache..
I don't have to explain that one.. ;-)
