My secret affair with Sports.. ;-)

As a part of employee engagement our organisation organises an annual sports day.. As a part of the same we hosted the Badminton and Table Tennis tournament today for Branches in our region.. For various reasons a colleague and me were the only 2 female employees who registered to take part in the event.. Although I 'love' sports I don't own any sporting equipment.. So I just borrowed racquets from my colleagues between their matches and played.. The actual fun began when we began warming up and people around watched me in surprise.. Received compliments saying I play well.. You see, I don't really have the slim, lithe figure of a sportsperson.. It's a universally accepted (but not always true) fact that 'fat' people can't play sports.. So while all the other 'fit' and sporty people were running around the court trying to smash the shuttle cock, I managed to get by just because of my height and fairly long limbs.. One of my bosses asked me if I played regularly.. To which I "humbly" replied 'No Sir'.. But the question did take me back to my childhood..

So, when I was a kid I loved playing any kind of game that involved running around or any kind of physical activity.. I remember I used to be the only girl who would try to wiggle her way into the boys group in the neighborhood and play Cricket.. The boys grudgingly let me in.. And I was allowed to field, keep wickets, occassionally bowl but never allowed to bat.. anyway it didn't bother me much at the time because all I wanted to do was play Cricket..

Then there was a phase where I was crazy about Volleyball.. So I would go to school during summer holidays and play volleyball with other classmates who would also come to school to play.. Of course my hands would be sore after the matches but at that point in time I just loved playing volleyball.. so the sore hands were a small price to pay in return for the happiness that game brought me..

Following this, I discovered Table Tennis (TT).. I owe my love for this game to my brother who introduced me to it.. I guess he needed to win over someone in order to boost his morale.. I made the perfect opponent to further this cause.. So as kids we would turn our dining table at home into the TT table.. and my mom's collection of huge books served as the net.. We would spend hours during holidays playing TT on our dining table and drive our mother crazy with our stupid fights on who won the match by cheating.. During Post Graduation I was part of the College team that won the championship at the University level.. It's definitely not because me..it was purely because of the other 2 teammates who were brilliant at the game.. I just tagged along because they needed a 3rd person to complete the team.. and I was the only female they found who could the TT racquet decently.. heh heh heh..

For a brief period I was in love with Chess.. I would spend hours at a neighbour's place learning the nuances of the game.. and I would want to play Chess all the time.. so on the days this neighbor wouldn't be around I would force my mother to play with me.. and she used to be fed up.. I guess she developed an aversion to the game after being 'forced' to play with me.. lol..

It was a beautiful walk down the memory lane reminiscing those days of my childhood.. Was brought back to reality with the cheering during the finals of the Badminton tournament.. Today, I witnessed some excellent sportsmanship.. brilliant serves, engaging volleys and players cheering and supporting each other while playing...I witnessed sportsmanship at its absolute best.. And after playing badminton and table tennis today (and losing but not without giving it my best) my body is sore and I just want to hit the sack.. but it was a day well spent and the memories of this day will remain with me for the rest of my life.. I'm happy and contented today and I hope I get many such opportunities to continue my "affair" with sports.. :-)
